First Baptist Church is led by a plurality of Elders under the headship of Jesus Christ (Acts 14.23, Acts 20.28, 1 Timothy 5.17, Titus 1.5).
Pastor Glen is an “Enfield boy” having grown up here and graduating from Enfield High School. In 1986 he received his bachelor’s degree in economics and finance from the University of Hartford.
From 1994-2008 Pastor Glen served as an elder of the church, training under our Pastor Emeritus, Rev. George H. Heiland and under Dr. Donald R. Gommesen. He was called by First Baptist Church to be the senior pastor in December 2008.
His patient wife, Cheryl, serves as our music director and his two daughters, Katie and Alyssa, serve in the music and Awana programs. Please make it a point to introduce yourself to Pastor Glen and his family!
George H. Heiland
Pastor Emeritus | Elder
Pastor Heiland is from New Jersey. Following High School he served 4 years in the USAF stationed in the Far East and Washington State. He graduated from Baptist Bible Seminary with a ThB in 1963 where he met and married his wife, Esther E (Good) Heiland, in 1959. She was born in Ohio and lived in parsonages there as well as in New York State and New Jersey.
The Heilands have three sons: Ken, Jefferson and Seth and ten grandchildren. Pastor and Esther ministered 10 years as home missionaries. First Baptist Church of Medford, NJ commissioned them to serve with the Fellowship of Baptist for Home Missions in 1962. They pioneered an apprentice program for 1 year in Ohio. They served 2 years in Maryland, 5 years with First Baptist Church in Enfield CT. followed by 2 years in Braintree, MA.
In 1973, Pastor Heiland received and accepted a call to return to FBC Enfield as Senior Pastor, serving in that capacity for 21 years. Seeking a respite from ministry, he worked 4 years for a diagnostic lab in Virginia. Pastor and Esther were called again to serve as missionaries. Having been sent by FBC Enfield, they served with Grace Baptist Missions International in Port St Lucie, FL.
After serving 10 years in Florida, Pastor and Esther returned to CT to retire and assist with their grandchildren in Torrington. They are pleased to be serving once again at First Baptist Church of Enfield.
